Distraction and fatigue
Protect the limited attention that steering, prediction, and emergency response all share.
At road speed, a glance can carry a vehicle across an intersection. The hands may stay on the wheel while the mind is somewhere else. Attention is not a mood. It is part of the control system.
Distraction spends three resources
A task can take your eyes, hands, or mind away from driving. Many tasks take more than one. Reading a message is visual and mental. Typing a reply adds manual distraction. A heated conversation can be mostly cognitive, yet still consume the prediction and judgment needed for traffic.
Drivers often believe they can divide attention cleanly. In practice, the brain switches between tasks. During the switch, important road information may never be processed. Looking back does not recover the pedestrian movement, brake-light change, or lane closure that happened while attention was elsewhere.
The useful rule is simple: finish setup before moving. Set the route. Choose audio. Secure loose items. Put needed controls within reach. If a task becomes important, leave traffic and stop in a safe place.

Phone law sets a floor
An adult driver may use a phone hands-free when the device and interaction follow California's rules. A handheld phone may not be operated while driving. A properly mounted device can be activated with no more than 1 swipe or tap, and the operation must not block the driver's view.
Minor drivers face a broader wireless-device restriction, including hands-free use, with an emergency exception. The California Driver Handbook summarizes these rules, while Vehicle Code sections 23123.5 and 23124 provide the statutory detail.
Legal use can still be poor judgment. A mounted screen can draw the eyes away too long. A call can become emotionally demanding. Voice systems can misunderstand and invite repeated correction. Treat the law as a minimum boundary. Protect attention beyond it.

Passengers and objects can become controls
Set expectations before the trip. Tell passengers that the driver may pause a conversation or ask for quiet in complex traffic. Give navigation and music tasks to a passenger when possible. Secure pets and cargo so a sudden stop does not send them into the driver's space.
A dropped object creates a trap. The instinct to grab it competes with steering and vision. Let it fall. Recover it after stopping. The same rule applies to food, spilled drinks, and anything that rolls under a pedal.
Children may need immediate help, but a moving vehicle is a poor place to provide it. Find a safe place to stop. Turning around while continuing to drive combines visual, manual, and balance problems at once.
Fatigue changes the driver before sleep arrives
Fatigue is not only falling asleep. It slows recognition, narrows attention, weakens lane control, and makes decisions less flexible. Warning signs include repeated yawning, heavy eyes, wandering thoughts, missed signs, uneven speed, drifting within the lane, and difficulty remembering the last stretch of road.
Do not bargain with those signs. Open windows, loud music, and cold air may create a brief feeling of alertness without restoring the underlying capacity. Caffeine can delay sleepiness for some people, but it is not a substitute for rest and its effect is not immediate or uniform.
The safe response is to stop driving. Change drivers, find a safe rest location, or end the trip. Plan breaks before a long drive and avoid beginning when normal sleep time or recent sleep loss makes fatigue likely.

Separate the distance traveled before braking from the distance traveled while braking.
Adjust the assumptions, then run the estimate.
Educational physics model: It uses constant speed during the selected response delay and constant deceleration after braking begins. It does not predict a specific car, tire, road, slope, weather condition, or driver.

Why a familiar route can be risky
Familiarity lowers the amount of conscious effort a task seems to require. That can invite mind wandering and create false confidence about a short trip. Familiar roads still change. A person, work crew, stalled vehicle, or new signal can appear where yesterday's memory predicts an empty path.
Build an attention checklist
Before moving, ask:
- Is the route set and the device mounted without blocking the view?
- Are passengers, pets, and objects secure?
- Am I rested enough to notice weak signals, not only obvious hazards?
- Is there any conversation or emotion that should settle before driving?
- Where can I stop if the workload becomes too high?
During the drive, let complexity set the social rules. Pause conversation near a busy crossing. Silence audio while finding an unfamiliar lane. Increase space when glare, weather, or traffic raises visual workload. Attention management is not about proving concentration. It is about making fewer demands on a limited system.
